Killings in Benue: Sen Zam says he is ‘completely broken’

Date:

The Chairman, Senate Committee on North Central Development Commission (NCDC), Senator Titus Zam, Benue North West (APC), has cried out that he is “completely broken” and that his “heart bleeds ceaselessly.”

Sen Zam was reacting to the Sunday attack at Aondona, a semi-urban centre in Gwer West, part of his senatorial districts and home of Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi when he made his feelings known.

Dozens of lives have been lost across Benue State since the beginning of the second quarter of this year following renewed attacks by the armed wing of herdsmen.

“I am completely broken this morning,” Senator Zam posted on his Facebook account, adding: “My heart bleeds ceaselessly.”

While the number of deaths is yet to be ascertained, the Gwer West Local Government Council (LGC) Chairman, Mr Ormin Victor, said a two-year-old was among those killed in Aondona.

TNT could not independently verify the claim by local sources that 13 bodies have been recovered following yesterday’s attack at Aondona, with the police putting the figure at three. SP Sewuese Anene, PPRO Benue Police Command says a policeman “died” while “defending one of the villages just a few hours before this incident in Gwer-west Local Government Area.”

Relatedly, Senator Emmanuel Udende, Benue North East (APC), has called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to halt insecurity in his districts. He made the call on Monday, 26th May 2025, during a courtesy visit to Tor Sankara, His Royal Highness Chief David Sevav.

According to Senator Udende, political differences will not help address the killings as he called for unity of purpose from both traditional institutions and religious and community leaders.

Meanwhile, Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, has assured that the state will overcome its present challenges.

Last week, the governor met with the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. The talks focused “on the vast opportunities and complex challenges facing Benue State and the broader North Central region.”

According to the Governor, a key part of their “conversation centred on Benue’s Anti-Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, a law born out of the urgent need to protect lives, foster peace, and ensure food security in our communities.”

  2. When Moses went to pray, during their exodus from Egypt to Canaan land, God told Moses to stop playing and get the people move forward,
Meaning, God expect action most at times than speaking,it doesn’t matter the number of your writing and speeches you present,
