NAFDAC says Nigerian Nestlé infant formulae safe

Date:

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said that Nestlé infant formulae available in Nigerian markets are safe and are not affected by the recent voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK.

Nestlé recently, as a precautionary measure, recalled several SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula products in the UK because they may contain cereulide toxin.

However, NAFDAC, in a statement by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reassured Nigerians that all Nestlé infant formulae approved for sale in Nigeria are safe and unaffected by the voluntary recall announced by Nestlé UK.

According to NAFDAC, the recalled batches did not originate from Nigeria, were not registered by the agency, and are not authorised for distribution in the country.

“The agency continues to maintain strict regulatory oversight to protect the health and safety of Nigerian infants and the general public,” the statement said.

NAFDAC also confirmed that the SMA range marketed in Nigeria is manufactured at Nestlé’s Tuas factory in Singapore and is duly registered with the agency. These include SMA GOLD 1, SMA GOLD 2, and SMA GOLD 3.

The agency further confirmed that the SMA and NAN ranges produced for the Nigerian market are not part of the recalled batches.
