The US State Department has revoked more than 100,000 foreign visas in 2025. The figure is more than twice that of 2024, the final year of President Joe Biden’s administration, representing an all-time record.
In 2024, the State Department revoked 40,000 visas.
Fox News reported that the majority of the revocations were for business and tourist travellers who overstayed their visas. Some 8,000 students and 2,500 specialised workers also lost their legal status, the report noted.
It quoted a department spokesperson saying a majority of the students and workers who lost their visas had criminal encounters with law enforcement.
In August last year, the Trump administration announced it was reviewing the status of all 55 million foreigners with valid U.S. visas.
“The Trump administration will continue to put America first and protect our nation from foreign nationals who pose a risk to public safety or national security,” State Department principal deputy spokesperson Tommy Piggott said in furtherance of the policy of the Trump administration. He added that the administration would continue its aggressive enforcement posture through its new “continuous vetting centre.”
