Benue Speaker returned as APC consensus candidate for Makurdi North

Date:

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Makurdi North State Constituency has returned Mr Alfred Emberga, Speaker of the Benue State Assembly, as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 State Assembly election.

Mr Emberga first won election into the State Assembly in 2023 and was later elected the Speaker in 2025.

His sole challenger for the 2027 APC ticket for Makurdi North, Mr Stephen Datso, stepped down from the contest just before the primary election proper.

Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Pointman in Makurdi, and Renewed Hope State Coordinator, Mr Terhemen Tarzoor, Nigeria’s former ambassador to Namibia, communicated the decision to APC members in the constituency who turned out for the primary election.

Mr Tarzoor indicated that closed-door talks culminated in the decision.

The speaker’s challenger said he stepped down in the party’s interest.
