The Head of Communications and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, has advised the communities behind Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State to relocate to safer locations to prevent loss of life and property.
Comrade Yakubu visited the dam to evaluate its condition and raise awareness about flooding and prevention in its communities. The visit comes as the rainy season begins, amid growing concerns over climate change and environmental degradation, which continue to increase the risk of flooding and related disasters.
The environment journalist also revealed plans to visit eight vulnerable communities surrounding the dam to educate residents on early warning signs and effective response strategies to minimise the impact of potential flooding.
He therefore called on residents to stop dumping refuse, especially pure water sachets, dirt, and garbage, into drainage channels, warning that such practices contribute to blocked waterways and heighten the risk of flooding.
Comrade Yakubu also used the opportunity to commend the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Red Cross, and other disaster management agencies for their continued commitment to timely emergency response during disasters.
