Ex-Benue guber aspirant, Dr. Kuraun, challenges students to embrace innovation

Date:

Erstwhile gubernatorial aspirant in Benue State and founder of the Jeffrey Kuraun Foundation (JKF), Dr. Jeffrey Kuraun has challenged students to embrace innovation and start small projects that can make a difference, no matter how modest.

Dr. Kuraun threw the challenge to students at the University of Mkar Mkar, Benue State, Nigeria, while delivering the university’s 19th Distinguished Public Lecture, titled “Navigating an Uncertain Future: Courage, Creativity and Responsibility in Times of Crisis.”

He encouraged students to seek education beyond the classroom by equipping themselves with practical skills that address real-world challenges. This, he said, can be achieved by building meaningful relationships across diverse backgrounds, thereby fostering trust and community spirit in a time when such connections are eroded.

Dr. Kuraun also urged students to redefine their roles in society, shifting from passive victims to proactive visionaries. “You are not just here to absorb knowledge. You are here to co-create the future,” he asserted, while inspiring a sense of empowerment among his audience.

“You are not just here to absorb knowledge. You are here to co-create the future,” he asserted, urging students to redefine their societal roles, shifting from passive victims to proactive visionaries.

During the lecture, the JKF founder painted a vivid picture of a global landscape riddled with conflict, climate crises, and economic instability. He explained that in Benue State, the issues manifest as violence and displacement, leaving many young people feeling trapped in a cycle of fear and despair.

“Pain, when ignored, festers,” he remarked, emphasising the importance of recognising collective suffering as a precursor to healing.

According to Dr. Kuraun, grounding oneself in values and purpose becomes essential in turbulent times. He encouraged his audience to prioritise mental health and seek support when needed, reminding them that faith—whether in oneself or a higher purpose—can provide strength in adversity.

He asserted that the government must fulfil its obligations, focusing on community-based security initiatives and transparent aid distribution. The university, too, must rise to the occasion, acting as a leader in social conscience and ethical leadership.

As Dr. Kuraun concluded, he delivered a message of hope: “You are the miracle Nigeria is waiting for,” he declared, instilling a sense of urgency and responsibility in the hearts of the audience.
