Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, have foiled an attack by suspected armed herders in Azege Village, Tombo Council Ward, Logo Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.
The operation, which took place on Monday, August 10, followed a distress call reporting an attack on the community, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer of the JTF, says in a statement.
According to the statement, troops of Sector 1 swiftly mobilised to the area and engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
The suspected armed herders were overwhelmed by the troops’ superior firepower and fled the area in disarray with the dead body of one of the assailants discovered at the scene.
Recovered during the operation were one AK-47 rifle, one magazine containing 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and one Nokia mobile phone, the statement said.
The recovered weapons and other items have been secured by the security forces, while the remains of the suspected attacker were evacuated by the police.
The JTF said efforts were ongoing to track and apprehend other members of the group who escaped during the encounter.
The command commended the troops for their tactical resilience and praised the Nigeria Police Force for its effective cooperation in the operation.
It also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to security agencies to prevent further attacks and protect lives and property.
