Cameroon’s Constitutional Council announced on Monday that 92-year-old Paul Biya is the winner of the country’s presidential election.
Biya, the second-longest-ruling president in Africa (after Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in Equatorial Guinea), won the poll with 53.7 per cent of the vote, defeating his near-rival and former government minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who came second with 35.2 per cent.
The 92-year-old is the second president of Cameroon since its independence from France in 1960, with the result implying he would be sworn in for a record eighth term
He has been serving as the president of Cameroon since 1982.
Reports say four people were killed on Sunday in clashes between security forces and supporters of the opposition in Douala.
