The Senate of the National Assembly (of Nigeria) on Wednesday, 2nd July, passed into law a bill seeking to change the name of the newly established Federal College of Agricultural Technology, Opialu-Ojapo, to Federal College of Agriculture and Technology, Opialu-Ojapo.
Titled Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act Amendment Bill, 2025, the bill is sponsored by Senator Abba Moro, Benue South (PDP) and Senate Minority Leader.
Emmanuel Eche’Ofun John, media adviser to the Senate minority leader, said in a statement that the bill passed its First and Second Readings on June 25, 2025, and was referred to the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions to report back in one week.
While presenting its report to the Senate on Wednesday, the committee chairman, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, said the bill’s intent was to change the name of the Federal College of Agricultural Technology, Opialu-Ojapo, to the Federal College of Agriculture and Technology, Opialu-Ojapo.
Senator Sharafadeen said the old name was too narrow for the institution, hence the change of name to widen its scope and actualise its dreams.
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, congratulated Senator Moro and the people of Benue South for the speedy legislative action on the bill and expressed optimism that the school would serve its purpose for Nigerians.
