Iran threatens US-linked Gulf energy sites after Trump’s Strait of Hormuz deadline

Date:

The Iranian government had threatened to “irreversibly destroy” US-linked energy sites across the Middle East if its power plants were targeted.

US President Donald Trump had earlier said the US will “obliterate” Iranian power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not open before a 48-hour deadline. The waterway is vital for global oil shipping.

There are fears that without electricity, Iran will be destroyed.

However, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has said it will “completely close” the Strait of Hormuz if the US targets Iranian energy infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, says he hopes to “re-establish” discussions between Iran and the US about Iran’s nuclear programme.

“I’ve been having important conversations here at the White House, and also with Iran. There are some contacts, and we hope to be able to re-establish that line,” he told CBS.
