In demanding for justice for the killing of their son, Mr. Ternenge Iorkyaa Ikpanor, the family of Ikpanor Agege Shar says the barbaric act has left them in an “indescribable state of grief.”
Mr. Ternenge, a.k.a Agege was last Friday, brutally stoned and macheted to death in the neighbouring town of Obudu, Cross River State, “under circumstances that are not only criminal but also inhuman and barbaric.”
The family therefore, calls on the Inspector- General of Police (IGP), to ensure full and “transparent investigation” into the killing so that “all perpetrators and collaborators are identified and brought to justice.”
Furthermore, the family is asking the IGP, to deploy measures that will facilitate the release of the corpse to the family for burial.
A family statement by Dr. Elijah Terdoo Ikpanor, a Director of Advancement and Linkages at the Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University (formerly Benue State University) Makurdi, views the killing as a tragedy and “national stain on our shared humanity and justice system.”
The family also urges the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to take action by launching an independent inquiry into the circumstances of Mr. Ikpanor’s murder, as well as provide legal and psychological support to the victim’s family – his wife and three children.
A video clip of the stonning to death of the commercial driver of Vandeikya Local Government Area origin, particularly, from Tsar, in Obodu last week in broad daylight went viral on social media, evoking emotions.
The deceased’s family reckons “such acts must not be swept under the carpet.”
