Guinea-Bissau soldiers take over power after reports of president’s arrest

Date:

A group of military officers in Guinea-Bissau have announced the takeover of power in the West African state, suspending the Constitution.

This comes amid reports that the president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, has been arrested.

Gunshots were heard in the capital, Bissau, with the BBC reporting government sources as saying that Embaló had been detained.

Military takeover in the country comes three days after a presidential election in which the main opposition candidate was disqualified.

The results were expected on Thursday, with both Embaló and his closest rival, Fernando Dias, claiming victory.
