Erstwhile Vice President and the Head of the ECOWAS Mission to observe the presidential election in Côte D’Ivoire, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, is in Abidjan for the election observation.
Ivorians will be casting the presidential ballot on October 25, with Nigeria’s erstwhile VP coordinating a joint mission comprising 207 observers from ECOWAS and 66 others from the African Union.
He was received on arrival on Monday, October 20, by Dr. Abdel- Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and the ECOWAS Representative in Côte D’Ivoire, H.E. Ms. Fanta Cissé.
Prof. Osinbajo expressed happiness and honour at leading the mission to the West African state.
He expressed his hope that the ongoing process would proceed in a peaceful manner and in accordance with regional and international principles, norms, and standards.
The October 25 election is taking place under tight security, in the face of a ban on political rallies.
President Alassane Ouattara, 83, is seeking a fourth term. The other candidates are Simone Gbagbo (Movement of Skilled Generations), Jean-Louis Billon (Democratic Congress), Ahoua Don Mello (Independent), and Henriette Lagou Adjoua (Group of Political Partners for Peace).
