Benue Governor advocates cultural preservation, unity at Igede Agba festival

Date:

The Governor of Benue State, Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has advocated for the preservation of culture and unity among communities in the state.

Fr. Alia, who made this known at the 2025 Igede Agba Yam Festival at Oju, Oju Local Government Area (LGA) headquarters, was represented by the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Dr. Sam Ode.

The governor praised the Igede nation for its resilience, unity, and deep commitment to cultural values, describing the Agba Yam Festival as not just a celebration of yam harvest but also a profound reminder of the community’s roots, identity, and shared bonds.

“The festival highlights the timeless truth that culture is the soul of a people,” Mr Ior Ikyereve, Deputy Chief Press Secretary Office of the Deputy Governor, quotes Dr Ode in a statement as saying.

“By preserving and celebrating our traditions, we give our children a sense of belonging, pride, and purpose. Such festivals are crucial in transmitting values of hard work, gratitude, and unity across generations,” the Deputy Governor said.

He reaffirmed the Benue State Government’s commitment to peace, unity, and development, noting that cultural festivals like Igede Agba strengthen harmony among diverse groups.

The deputy governor also congratulated His Royal Majesty, the Adirahu Ny’Igede, HRH CP Oga Ero (Rtd.), and the entire Igede traditional council for their efforts in maintaining and promoting their cultural heritage.

He acknowledged the significance of cross-cultural exchange, citing the presence of Tor Jechira, HRH Engr. Edward Ujege, and urged the Adirahu Ny’Igede to reciprocate such gestures when other communities host similar festivals.

Dr. Ode lauded the industry and diligence of the Igede people and highlighted ongoing development projects, including the progress made on the Oju–Awajir Road, which he said has already seen 10 kilometers of work completed.

The deputy governor also encouraged active participation in the ongoing voter registration exercise to ensure the people were not disenfranchised.

A key highlight of the event was the conferment of the traditional title of “Ochonye of Igede” on Dr. Sam Ode, alongside a Humanitarian Award of Honour, presented to Dr. Chris Agoha of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.

The festival’s royal host, HRH CP Oga Ero, expressed gratitude to the governor, government officials, and attendees for honoring the occasion, describing their presence as a demonstration of love for the Igede nation, and prayed for blessings and safety for all participants.
