President of Côte d’Ivoire, Mr. Alassane Ouattara, 83, has announced that he will run for a fourth term. Elections are due in Côte d’Ivoire in October this year.
Mr. Ouattara has dismissed claims about his health, saying his candidacy was driven by a need to “preserve national stability amid ongoing security and economic challenges.”
He also said the country’s Constitution, approved in 2016, reset his two-term limit, allowing him the chance to contest.
Several potential challengers of Mr. Ouattara have already been barred from the race.
Former President Laurent Gbagbo, ex-Prime Minister Guillaume Soro, and former Minister Tidjane Thiam are among those barred.
It is understood that more than 8.7 million Ivorians have registered to vote.
