Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and the Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, have agreed to serve as the Chairman and Royal Father respectively for the upcoming “Benue at 50” celebrations.
Both leaders accepted the invitation from the Benue State Government during separate visits from a state delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Sam Ode.
A week-long series of activities marking the golden jubilee of Nigeria’s “Food Basket State” is scheduled to take place between June 22 and June 27.
“The Governor specifically directed that this invitation be delivered personally because of the immense respect he has for His Imperial Majesty. We have continued to witness his impactful leadership, advocacy for peace, and cultural renaissance across Nigeria and beyond,” Dr. Ode told the Ooni at his palace.
In accepting the invitation, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi assured the delegation of his participation and full support for the anniversary.
He also commended the efforts of the Father Hyacinth Alia administration in addressing developmental challenges and promoting peace across Benue State.
The monarch noted that Benue occupies a special place in his heart, having completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mandatory service year there. He added that the hospitality, kindness, and sense of community he enjoyed during his time in the state remain unforgettable.
Similarly, General Gowon expressed his appreciation to Father Alia and the people of Benue State for the honor. He commended the governor’s commitment to good governance and expressed satisfaction with how the administration is confronting the security challenges facing the state.
According to a statement by the Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ior Ikyereve, the Benue State Government delegation led by the Deputy Governor included the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Musa Sulaiman Ujor, and the Director General of Plenipotentiary and Liaison Affairs (Abuja), Jimmy Terhemen Ajim.
