Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have been urged to view their roles as complementary to government efforts to promote sustainable development and good governance.
Dr. James Zasha, an international development consultant, gave the charge during the unveiling of the 20th Anniversary Logo of Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiatives (CLHEI), held in Makurdi, Benue State capital.
According to Dr. Zasha, CSOs occupy a strategic position within the social contract between government and citizens. He explained that while civil society groups can advocate for government policies, they must also empower citizens to demand accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.
Using the recently introduced tax law as an example, Dr Zasha noted that public confusion over its provisions highlights the need for CSOs to step in, provide clarity, and educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities.
While consistently encouraging CSOs to leave a positive legacy, Dr Zasha commended CLHEI for its 20 years of impactful service to humanity.
Earlier, the Country Lead and Executive Director of Community Links, Dr Helen Teghtegh, reflected on the organisation’s journey, noting that the last two decades have provided opportunities to contribute meaningfully to societal development.
Dr Teghtegh highlighted key achievements, including the adoption of the INEC framework for Internally Displaced Persons’ voting and the implementation of a Safeguarding Policy for humanitarian interventions by the Benue State Government.
The ceremony also witnessed the presentation of a ₦300,000 matching grant to a widows’ Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) group after the successful management of an initial ₦50,000 inception grant over twelve months.
In their goodwill messages, the Benue State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BENSEMA), the Bureau of International Development and Cooperation, and the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Benue State congratulated Community Links on its 20th anniversary and pledged continued collaboration.
