The Rivers State Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Oduh.
Majority Leader Major Jack read out the notice of impeachment during plenary presided by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, on Thursday, January 8.
26 members of the Rivers State Assembly signed the notice, which they alleged was against the Nigerian Constitution.
Some of the accusations include the demolition of the Assembly Complex, extra-budgetary spending, withholding funds intended for the Assembly Service Commission, and a refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the House’s financial autonomy.
The speaker said the notice would be served on Mr Fubara within the next 7 days.
Mr Fubara has faced an “intense political crisis ” with a state of emergency declared in the South-South state on March 18, 2025. For six months, during which the emergency rule was in force, an administrator took over Mr Fubara’s office. He assumed his office after the period of the declaration.
