Work commences on 38.6km Makurdi township roads, Works Ministry issues a diversion notice
MAKURDI – Work has commenced on the 38.6Km roads project in “a major effort in urban renewal in Makurdi metropolicies” by the Government of Benue State.
Director, Civil Engineering Services at the Ministry of Works, Makurdi, Engr. Tivfa Wombo on Tuesday, January 6, announced that the Fr. Alia administration has approved the reconstruction and dualisation of major township roads in the state capital, including Kashim Ibrahim Road; David Mark Bye Pass; Joe Akaahan Road; John Atom Kpera Road; Atiku Abubakar Road; Iyorchia Ayu Road; Abdulahi Sheleng Road, Old Otukpo Road; and JS Taraka Way. He also announced a traffic diversion effective Thursday, January 8, for Otukpo and Lafia traffic.
“It is a total reconstruction,” Engr. Wombo told journalists in his office adding that the project’s cost, including taxes, was N56b.
He said each road will have a road divider and a walkway on both sides.
“We are going to provide bus stops at designated areas. There will be 52 throughout the roads. We are (also) going to install automated traffic control systems – digital traffic control systems at junctions necessary for it,” Engr. Wombo explained.
Engr. Wombo, who appeals for “calm,” says the work is expected to be completed within six weeks.
“Within six weeks, we are expected to get out of those major roads, and we will allow traffic to flow as usual. Remember, we are going to bring the street lights back to the roads.
“All the roads within Makurdi metropolis will be like what you have on Ishaya Bakut Road, and in this case, like I earlier said, Bus Stops will be on the roads.
“Vehicles can only stop at the bus stop. You can’t just park anywhere and alight passengers or pick passengers,” the director explained.
