The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University (MOAUM) announced the suspension of the strike action embarked upon by the union.
Dr Ali Sule Ako, Chairperson of the union, in a statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, said the development is consequent upon approval of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC). The union had on June 1 announced “indefinite, total and comprehensive strike” to push home their demands.
According to the statement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) through a tripartite agreement involving the Benue State Government, the university administration, and the union was successfully reached, leading to the suspension of the strike.
ASUU said the agreement reflects the commitment of all parties to resolving the issues that triggered the strike through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The union said it had demonstrated good faith and made sacrifices in the interest of the university community and is hopeful that the Benue State Government and the university management would reciprocate by faithfully implementing the terms of the agreement and respecting the principles of collective bargaining.
It stressed that lasting industrial peace could only be achieved when agreements entered into by all parties are honoured promptly and in good faith. It noted that the suspension of the strike was based on the confidence that the commitments contained in the MoU would be implemented.
Consequently, ASUU MOAUM has directed all academic staff of the university to resume their official duties immediately and continue to discharge their responsibilities diligently, paving the way for the resumption of normal academic activities.
The union also appreciated its members, students, parents and the general public for their patience, understanding, and solidarity throughout the period of the strike. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its members while promoting the growth and development of the university through peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue.
