Benue Assembly passes Widows Commission Bill into Law

The Benue State Assembly, on Tuesday, January 20, in a plenary session, passed into law a bill seeking the establishment of the Benue State Widows Commission and the Prohibition of harmful cultural practices against Widows.

Upon the governor’s assent, the law will protect widows from exploitative acts and punish offenders.

The bill was passed after scaling through a third reading during a plenary presided by the Speaker, Mr Alfred Emberga, Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Michael Zape says in a statement.

Mrs Becky Orpin, Gboko East and Chair of the House Standing Committee on Women Affairs, reporting to the House on the bill, said that when passed into law, it will cure cultural norms and practices that negatively impact widows upon the death of their husbands.

The bill passed with unanimous support from members, and the Speaker called for third reading.
