Political parties and candidates in Benue State have signed a peace accord committing themselves to violence-free campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.
The pact was signed on Tuesday, September 15, in Makurdi during a meeting hosted by the Benue State Police Command, attended by party chairmen, candidates, representatives of sister security agencies and other stakeholders.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, warned political leaders against recruiting or using thugs, cult groups and other criminal elements to intimidate opponents or disrupt campaigns.
CP Nwadiogbu urged candidates to control their supporters and ensure that political activities are conducted peacefully and within the law.
He assured political parties that the Police Command would remain professional and impartial while providing security for all lawful political activities.
The CP also urged parties to maintain effective communication with security agencies, particularly when planning rallies, campaigns and other major political events.
The Command called on all stakeholders to uphold the spirit of the accord and work towards peaceful and credible elections in Benue.
