Benue State Governor Fr. Hyacinth Alia, on Monday, June 8, gave his assent, bringing the Benue State Electricity Law into force.
The law provides a legal framework for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within Benue State.
Fr. Alia gave his assent to the law at a brief ceremony at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi.
Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, says “the law will help deliver more reliable electricity, stimulate economic development, protect consumers, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents across Benue State, positioning the state for greater industrialisation and sustainable growth.”
The law, the CPS said, will pave the way for more reliable and stable power supply in the state, enhance economic growth and job creation, reduce the cost of doing business, enhance consumer protection, and rural electrification and improved quality of life.
In February this year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) signed the Electricity Act Amendment Bill 2025 into law, removing electricity from the Exclusive Legislative List and giving state governments legal authority to generate, transmit, distribute and regulate power within their territories.
