The Benue State Government (BNSG) and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have entered into a partnership that could deliver clean, renewable power to over one million people in the state.
The Nigerian Government had on June 9 adopted the Electricity Act 2023, which repeals the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005, liberalising electricity generation, transmission, and distribution at the National level and empowering States, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity.
Fr. Hyacinth Alia, Executive Governor of Benue State, said his government had at the 24th State-by-State Energy Roundtable, held on January 28, “unveiled a clear, investor-ready pathway to unlock Benue’s vast electricity potential under the Electricity Act 2023, moving power development from policy to real impact at the state level.”
According to the governor, the partnership with REA “opens the door to private-sector investment, with thousands of viable mini-grid sites across the state to power homes, farms, hospitals, and businesses.
“It will strengthen agriculture and food production, improve healthcare, boost security, and create jobs.
“We are building a functional, investor-friendly electricity market that delivers real impact for our people.”
