The Commissioner of Police (CP), Benue State Command, CP Emenari Ifeanyi, has said that among the bandits that attacked Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area (LGA) last Friday, June 13, two were neutralised during confrontation with security personnel stationed in the community.
CP Ifeanyi stated this at the Police Command headquarters in Makurdi while updating journalists on the Yelwata attack and efforts to further protect lives and property in the state.
One of the bandits that attacked Yelwata was arrested and is “giving the police useful information,” CP Ifeanyi revealed. He, however, did not disclose the identity of the suspect.
Scores were killed in the Yelwata attack, with the CP putting the figure at 47. Local sources have put the figure at over 200.
According to CP Ifeanyi, the bandits wanted to overrun Yelwata but for the response of Police Tactical teams and other security agents in the area.
CP Ifeanyi, who said Yelwata is now safe, noted that the Inspector General of Police has deployed more personnel who have been sent to troubled areas and locations that are susceptible to attacks.
He gave the assurances of his command and sister security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that the Yelwata incidence does not happen again.
