Flamingos make history, beat Japan to win U-17 World Cup

Date:

Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history, defeating Japan 2-1 to win their maiden FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title in Morocco on Saturday.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled Nigeria’s lead in the 47th minute.

Japan pulled one back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute but could not find an equaliser as the Nigerian girls held on for victory.

The triumph makes Nigeria the first African nation to win the tournament, capping a remarkable campaign after an opening defeat to Poland.

The Flamingos had earlier defeated Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals to reach their first-ever final.
