Former Client Services Director at Prof. David Iornem’s Institute of Management Consultants (IMC), Kaduna, Amos Apaa, has earned a PhD in Human Resource Management from the Department of Political Science, Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi.
Apaa successfully defended his doctoral thesis, titled “Manpower Training and Productivity in Insurance Organisations: A Study of Alliance and General Insurance Plc,” at a Viva Voce held on Tuesday.
The study examined the impact of manpower training on organisational productivity in Nigeria’s insurance industry, using Alliance and General Insurance Plc as a case study over the 2012–2023 period.
Apaa, who later joined Alliance and General Insurance Plc after his stint at the Institute of Management Consultants, adopted a survey research design, drawing data from structured questionnaires and interviews.
The research examined the relationship between manpower training and employee performance, staff retention, skill development, as well as factors influencing training and development in insurance organisations.
He told TNT that his study found that Alliance and General Insurance Plc operates a broad workforce training programme covering technical and product knowledge, customer service, digital skills, leadership development and regulatory compliance, although the frequency varies across the different areas.
It concluded that effective manpower training is critical to improving productivity, employee retention and organisational effectiveness in Nigeria’s insurance sector.
The research further established that targeted training in areas including risk management, sales, leadership and customer service contributes significantly to skill development and technological adoption—factors considered essential for competitiveness in an increasingly dynamic insurance industry.
While describing perceptions of existing training programmes as generally moderate to positive, the thesis identified room for improvement in the quality, relevance and delivery of training.
Apaa’s successful defence adds a new academic milestone to a professional journey that has straddled management consultancy and the insurance industry.
