Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref has admitted an “error of judgement” in allowing Erling Haaland’s controversial winner for Manchester City against Manchester United.
Haaland struck in the 60th minute at Old Trafford, turning in Josko Gvardiol’s cross after the goal was initially ruled out for offside. VAR overturned the decision, ruling Haaland onside because Patrick Dorgu’s boot played him on.
However, Pro Ref later acknowledged that United’s Enzo Fernandez, who was also in an offside position and appeared to challenge for the ball, may have interfered with play.
Pro Ref said VAR should have recommended an on-field review, adding that it had contacted Manchester United to acknowledge the error.
United defender Lisandro Martinez described the decision as an “injustice”, while manager Michael Carrick said he was “confused”.
The controversy overshadowed an extraordinary derby in which City were reduced to 10 men after Phil Foden was sent off in the 23rd minute for kicking Bruno Fernandes.
