Journalists from across Benue State have converged on Makurdi for a two-day HumAngle Solutions and Data Journalism Workshop focused on countering misinformation and promoting peace in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
The training, which brings together practitioners from the print, broadcast and online media, is designed to sharpen journalists’ skills in information integrity, verification, data journalism, conflict-sensitive reporting and solutions journalism.
Welcoming participants, Khadijat Oscar, Programmes Officer at HumAngle, urged journalists to uphold professional standards, remain neutral and exercise sensitivity in reporting issues capable of deepening conflict or threatening social cohesion.
The workshop, themed “Countering Misinformation and Promoting Peace in Nigeria’s North Middle Belt,” seeks to equip participants with practical tools for navigating an increasingly complex information environment, particularly in communities affected by insecurity, displacement and humanitarian crises.
Technical sessions on the opening day were led by experts, including Johnstone Kpilaakaa, who took participants through key aspects of information integrity, verification and responsible journalism.
Founded in March 2020 by Ahmad Salkida and Obiora Chukwumba, HumAngle is an independent nonprofit media and knowledge institution focused on conflict, humanitarian crises, development and accountability across Africa.
The organisation combines journalism with programmes, policy engagement, advocacy and capacity building to help communities, decision-makers and institutions better understand and respond to human insecurity.
