2nd woman to be appointed to INEC leadership, May takes over

The longest-serving National Commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu, has assumed the role of Acting National Chairman of INEC.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing INEC chairman, handed over duties to Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at INEC headquarters in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu is the second woman to be appointed to the leadership of the Commission. The first was Amina Zakari, who was appointed by the former PBAT following the expiration of Prof. Attahiru Jega’s tenure.

According to a note on the INEC website, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, who hails from Delta State, is a seasoned legal practitioner with over three decades of experience working with diverse clients in both the public and private sectors.

She was called to the Bar in 1985, following her studies in law at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ilé-Ifè (formerly the University of Ife). She is also qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, having attended the College of Law, London.

A holder of LLM with specialisation in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, London, Mrs Agbamuche-Mbu, until she was appointed INEC Commissioner, was the managing partner of her law firm in Lagos, Norfolk Partners, and also the editor of THISDAY LAWYER, a weekly legal pullout in ThisDay newspaper.
