Benue State has taken another step towards strengthening its legal response to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), with Lawyers Alert (LA) joining other key stakeholders in a comprehensive review of the state’s laws and policies aimed at protecting survivors and improving access to justice.
The four-day Technical Review Meeting on Laws Preventing and Responding to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence brought together legal experts and stakeholders to examine existing legal and policy frameworks, identify gaps, and align state laws with national and international standards.
LA, represented at the meeting by its Associate Director, Victor Eboh, Esq., and Legal Officer, Mary Dzuamo, contributed legal and policy expertise to discussions focused on developing a more coordinated and survivor-centred response to SGBV in Benue State.
Participants reviewed existing legislation with the aim of strengthening accountability, closing legal loopholes, ending impunity for perpetrators, and ensuring survivors receive adequate protection, justice, and support.
The technical review was supported by the European Union-Support to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (EU-SGBV) Programme in Nigeria and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Justice.
