MAKURDI – Lobi Stars Football Club of Makurdi moved to second position in the Group C standings of the Nigeria National League (NNL) following a hard-fought win over Doma United Football Club at McCarthy Stadium, Makurdi, on Saturday, February 21.
The victory marks a significant homecoming for the side; for the past four years, the Makurdi team played their “home” games away from their base, a period during which they suffered relegation to the NNL.
Despite Lobi Stars maintaining control of the early exchanges in Makurdi, it was the visitors who struck first. Abubakar Abdulahi put Doma United in the lead in the 15th minute against the run of play.
Lobi Stars responded 29 minutes later when Abdulazeez Tijani restored parity with a clinical finish. The comeback was completed in the 80th minute by Man of the Match, Suur Kumaga, who secured the winner for the Makurdi side with a sublime free-kick.
Lobi Stars’ Chief Coach, John Onu, expressed satisfaction with the result but remained cautious. He told sports journalists, “We are happy with the victory, but we need to improve by converting more of our chances into goals.”
Club Chairman, Terver Ikya, added that the management and coaching staff would use the lessons from this game to correct any lingering tactical mistakes moving forward.
