The Federal Republic of Nigeria has condemned what it calls Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran. There is an escalation of hostilities between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel.
Overnight, Iran launched a wave of retaliatory strikes in response to Israel’s attacks on its nuclear facilities and missile sites.
The BBC reports that two people have died in the strikes, with explosions heard in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
In response, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry says, “Nigeria expresses its grave concern and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities and urges both parties to exercise utmost restraint in the interest of regional and global peace.
“The continued cycle of retaliation not only endangers civilian lives but threatens to plunge the broader Middle East into further instability, with implications for international security and economic development.”
Meanwhile, Islamic militants operating in North Central Nigeria under the guise of herdsmen have again struck in Yelwata, a Benue community on Abuja-Keffi-Lafi-Makurdi Road, leaving dozens killed and or burnt.
Unconfirmed reports by locals put the number of bodies recovered so far at 107.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nigeria Police, Benue Command, DSP Udeme Edet, earlier told journalists that the police neutralised some of the attackers. She is not specific about casualty figures.
Yelewata has been brought to rubble as a search for victims of the massacre continues, locals say.
Benue State Deputy Governor Dr. Sam Ode visited the scene and was received by Mr. Maurice Orwough, Chairman of the Guma Local Government Council and Benue ALGON.
The last time President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT) mentioned killings in Benue State was in April this year. Contrary to his promise, the attacks and killings persist, with over 100 killed in one single Yelwata night operation.
