Trump, Putin to meet in Alaska on war in Ukraine

Date:

US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have landed in Anchorage, Alaska, for a possible deal in ending the war in Ukraine.

The two leaders will meet at the steps of the Russian president’s plane when it arrives in Alaska, says spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Trump says he “won’t be happy” if a ceasefire isn’t agreed during the meeting, which is set to start at 11:30 local time (20:30 BST).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited to the talks earlier, said Ukraine was “counting on America” as the US president began his journey to Anchorage.

The Kremlin says the talks between Putin and Trump could last up to seven hours.

Tens of thousands of Russian and Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

President Trump is looking ahead to a second meeting – possibly involving Ukraine itself and some European powers.

Zelensky thinks there is no sign that Russia is preparing for peace.

In a post on Telegram, Zelensky says, “On the day of the negotiations, they also kill people. That says a lot,” adding that “The war continues.”

“It continues precisely because there is no order, nor any indication that Moscow is preparing to end this war,” he went on.
