The Kwande Parliament, a non-political organisation, has called on political parties, aspirants and their supporters to embrace issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against politics of insults, violence and division.
The organisation made the call in Makurdi, Benue State capital, on Tuesday, August 18, through its President, Comrade Bito Philip Tertindi, following the release of the timetable for the 2027 elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which signals the commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Comrade Tertindi urged political actors to remain law-abiding as they embark on rallies and other political engagements, stressing that politics should be about ideas, solutions and service to the people rather than personal attacks, bitterness and bloodshed.
According to a statement by the organisation’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Benjamin Hilekaan, the president said, “It is God who appoints leaders and gives power to whoever pleases Him.” Therefore, there was no justification for politicians and their supporters to insult, fight, or kill one another over elections.
The Kwande Parliament urged candidates to tell voters what they intend to do in office, particularly their policies, development plans and strategies for improving the lives of citizens, rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric and character assassination.
It also stressed that elections should unite communities rather than tear them apart, calling on political parties and their supporters to place the peace and development of Kwande, Benue State and Nigeria above personal and political interests.
The organisation wished all political parties well as campaigns begin and prayed for peaceful, credible and issue-driven elections capable of producing leaders who would advance development across the country.
