Benue: JONAPWD calls for immediate implementation of Disability Act

The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Gboko Chapter, has called for the immediate implementation of the Disability Act, which was recently assented to by the Governor of Benue State, Fr. Hyacinth Alia.

JONAPWD Chairman in Gboko, Mr Tersoo Abu, who made the call on behalf of the association recently, during a public celebration in Gboko, urged the government to partner with his association to promote the well-being of Persons living with Disabilities (PWDs).

The event, which aim was to observe the 2025 United Nations World Disability Day, focused on promoting the rights and well-being of PWDs, with special emphasis on making societies truly inclusive for full social development, building on commitments from the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Mr Abu, who bemoaned the discrimination against his members in society, called for attitudinal change.

Representative of Gboko East State Constituency, Mrs. Becky Orpin, who delivered a goodwill message, assured of continued assistance and cooperation to persons living with disabilities.

The celebration began with a colourful walk procession by members of the association from JS Tarka Stadium to the secretariat of Gboko Local Government Area. It was held under the theme: “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.”
