Court orders N/Assembly to delineate additional constituency in Benue

Date:

The Federal High Court sitting in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Wednesday, November 5, issued an order, directing the National Assembly (of Nigeria) to delineate a constituency out of the present Gboko East State Constituency in Gboko LGA, Benue State.

Justice M. S Abubakar, Presiding Judge of the court, issued the order in a judgment delivered in suit number FHC/MKD/CS/81/2024 and instituted by a former lawmaker, Hon Ayoo Angwe, Hon Asemave Igba, Hon David Tion and Hon Igbanum Bathlomew against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Assembly, and the Attorney General of the Federation.

The plaintiffs were led by their counsel, Emmanuel Hundu, Esq., who relied on sections 91, 113, and 115 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to make the case.

By the decision, Gboko East I will be created out of the existing Gboko East State Constituency.

The decision, according to Hundu, Esq, is a great step forward towards deepening democracy in Nigeria, as the issues presented were solely constitutional.

He commended Hon (Mrs) Beckie Orpin, Gboko East (APC), for her role in the actualisation of the struggle for a new constituency in Gboko East.
