The National Water Resources Institute in Kaduna and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on training and the exchange of expertise in water engineering, flood management, and data processing.
According to Mr. Terhemen Oraduen, Personal Assistant to the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation on Media and Publicity, the signing ceremony took place on Tuesday, November 4, at the Nigerian-Hungarian Water Forum held in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, expressed delight that the academic partnership between the two countries will advance the training of Nigerian engineers and researchers, improve the exchange of expertise in flood control, river basin management, and hydro-informatics.
According to Prof. Utsev, the collaboration directly supports the Federal Government’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to achieving water security, universal access to safe drinking water, and a sanitation revolution across the thirty-six states and the FCT.
The minister described the forum as a unique opportunity to elevate Hungarian visibility in Nigeria’s water sector, while opening pathways for public-private partnerships, direct investments in technology deployment, and joint ventures in water treatment, irrigation, desalination, and digital water management.
Hungarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Lorand Endreffy, described the Water Forum as a platform to share knowledge and ideas on flood management and research, as well as to support the Nigerian government in its efforts to address water challenges and perennial flooding caused by climate change and population growth.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister for Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof Utsev, for the positive reforms being implemented in the water and sanitation sector to improve access to clean, safe and sustainable water in Nigeria.
