ASUU suspends strike

Date:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced suspension of its two-week warning strike.

Last week, ASUU declared a warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria over what it called the Federal Government of Nigeria’s (FGN’s) reluctance to meet its long-standing demands.

On Wednesday, October 22, at the ASUU headquarters in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension of the strike.

Prof. Piwuna, who read a prepared speech before newsmen, explained that the decision to suspend the strike was reached following intervention by the Senate and some other well-meaning Nigerians.

He, however, stated that the National Executive Council of the Union had resolved to give the government a one-month window to address all contentious areas.

The FGN had threatened to apply the “no work, no pay” principle should ASUU continue its warning strike.
