The Senior National Adviser, Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), Alhaji Ibrahim Saleh Hassan, has charged Nigerian parents to follow their kids on social media.
Alhaji Hassan, who gave the charge in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, said doing so will provide parents with an idea about what their children are doing on social media with a view to correcting them.
He explained that following them and joining possible groups they belong to may not necessarily require them to make comments on their posts; it only provides an opportunity for monitoring and direction.
Alhaji Hassan and his team are working on strategies for resolving conflict with emphasis on early warning signs and response, and have found social media to be a veritable platform to push for the achievement of their strategy.
“We have come to realise that social media is key, especially in giving early warnings. So, what we want to do is develop an early warning strategy. We are not only developing a strategy; we are working with border states in Benue so that we have a cross-border strategy. We hope that we will use social media to promote it,” he said.
The HD team has been working with communities in Agatu, Konshisha/Oju Local Government Areas (LGAs), using dialogue to resolve conflict.
