The Government of Benue State through the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management Makurdi has abolished what the ministry refers to as “unpopular use of restricted customised education materials such as text/exercise books in Benue State Schools.”
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Helen Nembativ Zeramo, in a communication dated August 15, and titled “New Education Policy in Benue Public and Private Schools,” said the development is pursuant to the policies of the Governor, Fr. Hyacinth Alia “which seeks to emancipate the Benue masses.”
Also abolished is the compulsory and extended lessons after regular school hours unless where express parental rights are sought and granted.
“All compulsory school graduation ceremonies in Benue State are hereby abolished especially for kindergarten, Nursery, and Basic schools,” the new policy further provides.
The implementation of the policies is to be strictly adhered to upon the commencement of the first term of 2025/2026 Academic year, the ministry noted.
Consequently, a meeting to engage with proprietors of schools, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), and concerned education stakeholders on the new development is scheduled for Tuesday, 26th August 2025.
