UK Prime Minister resigns under mounting pressure

Date:

Less than two years after leading Labour to a landslide general election victory, Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister.

In an emotional speech outside Downing Street on Monday, Sir Keir acknowledged growing pressure within his own party and said he would step down with immediate effect.

“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the general election,” he said. “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question. I accept that answer with good grace.”

His resignation triggers a contest to choose a new Labour leader and Prime Minister, marking a dramatic turn in British politics less than two years after Labour’s return to power.
