Bill for additional LGAs in Benue passes Second Reading at N/Assembly

Date:

A bill seeking the amendment of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the creation of additional Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State on Tuesday, October 28, passed Second Reading.

The bill is sponsored by Rep David Ogewu, Oju/Obi Federal Constituency (APC).

Recorded as HB2527, the bill was first read on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, when Speaker of the House Tajudeen Abbas reminded the Honourable members while introducing the bill for debate on its general principles.

The motion for the second reading was moved by the sponsor, Rep Ogewu, and seconded by Rt. Hon. Chinedu Ogar, Ezza South/Ikwo Federal Constituency.

Rep Ogewu is optimistic that the bill, when passed into law, would pave the way for the creation of additional LGAs in Benue State, particularly within his federal constituency, thereby bringing the government closer to the people.

At the close of his second term as Governor of Benue State in 2007, Senator George Akume made unsuccessful attempts to create additional LGAs in the state.
