‘No deal,’ says Trump after Ukraine talks with Putin

Date:

US President Donald Trump, after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, has told a news conference that there’s no deal until there’s a deal. The deal is for a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine.

Trump and Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, making “some headway” on Ukraine during the three-hour meeting.

“We didn’t get there” on a Ukraine deal with Putin, Trump said.

Trump indicated he will call Nato allies and others, including Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, because a deal is “ultimately” up to them, and they will have to agree.

To make a “settlement lasting and long-term, we need to eliminate the primary causes of the conflict,” Putin said without giving details.

“I would like to thank Trump for the well-wishing tone,” said Putin, adding that “both sides should be results oriented.”

“Trump clearly cares about the prosperity of his nation. But understands Russia has its own interests,” he went on. His hope is that Ukrainians and Europeans choose to “not throw a wrench in” the peace process.

None of the presidents answered questions from the media at the end of the summit.
