Wafcon 2024: Nigeria beats Morocco to claim 10th title

Date:

Nigeria turned the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations (Wafcon) final around with a late goal, which saw the Super Falcons win their 10th continental title.

The Atlas Lionesses of Morocco were 2-0 ahead in the 63rd minute, having scored twice in the first half, only for Nigeria to stage an incredible comeback.

It was Esther Okoronkwo who brought Nigeria back into the game when she tucked away a cool penalty. Then Folashade Ijamilusi restored parity in the 71st minute. Jennifer Echegini would drive in the final nail by beating goalkeeper Khadija Errmichi into the right-hand corner of the net, sending Nigeria to their 10th Wafcon title.

Therefore, Mission X was accomplished with three goals in 22 minutes, in an astounding end to the 2024 Wafcon finals.

Okoronkwo, who is named the player of the match, ends the tournament with two goals and six assists.

The new-look Wafcon trophy and $1m (£743,000) in prize money are coming to Nigeria.
