Principal Special Assistant (PSA) to the Governor of Benue State on Forestry and Logging, Mr Orkuma Adzua Ikyur, has penned a touching narrative of how he “escaped untimely death from Police unprofessionalism” in Makurdi, the state capital.
In a post on his Meta account, Orkuma Adzua Ikyur Madah, the PSA said he was “startled by loud shouts accompanied by several gunshots” in his compound around 7 a.m, Tuesday, March 17, while he was still in his bedroom.
According to his account, he heard his “door being forcefully hit” as bullets were fired directly at his door, piercing through the door and tearing through the chair he normally sits in as they penetrated several parts of the wall in the parlour.
He explained that “Amid the chaos of gunfire and shouting, I lay flat and crawled on my belly out of my room. It was only after I came out, wearing nothing but my boxers, that the shooting stopped.
“I later discovered that it was my next-door neighbour who had called the police (MOPOL, as written on their uniforms) because his motorcycle had been stolen around 4 a.m. According to him, the robbers broke through his window net, took his keys, unlocked his motorcycle, opened the main gate, and left.
“What remains deeply troubling to me is this: out of the four apartments in the compound, excluding the complainant’s, why did the police single out my room and spray it with bullets without any justification? You arrived 3 hours after the thieves left, looked at my door, and assumed the thief was still there?
“God truly saved me. I usually go to the parlour in the morning to watch the news, and the exact chair where I normally sit was hit right at the headrest. Coincidentally, I was too tired last night and didn’t go there until this morning.
“Honestly, I don’t even know how best to express this, but thank You, God, for preserving my life from the hands of unprofessional police officers.
“My case will always be different.”
