The BSU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tor Joe Iorapuu says the combined 22nd, 23rd, 24th Convocation of the university marks the completion of all the outstanding Convocations of BSU. He reiterated the commitment of the university management under his leadership to ensure that students no longer have to wait for results as they see it on time.
Prof Iorapuu mentioned some of the achievements of the university in the last one year to include improvement in hostel accommodation, improved quota for admission at the College of Health Sciences, takeoff of studies in three of the four new faculties including Pharmaceutical Sciences, Media and Communication Studies, Technology and Industrial Studies, with admission into faculty of Architecture under way.
According to the Vice Chancellor, BSU is benefitting from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Universities’ Innovation Pod’s (UNIPOD’s) One Million Dollar ambitious project, designed to enhance research, technological development and innovation, housing a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) laboratory for precision engineering, a renewable energy laboratory aimed at fostering sustainable energy solutions, a food processing laboratory for agricultural innovation, creative laboratory to inspire artistic exploration, a textiles laboratory, supporting studies in material science and fashion and an information technology and prototype laboratory focused on software development and model testing.
He explained that the BSU UNIPOD Hub is significant as a beacon of learning and experimentation, preparing students and staff to solve real-world challenges and relevant for collaborative research, entrepreneurship and technological development.
While commending the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) for its intervention in infrastructural development and training of staff of the university, the Vice Chancellor, during a post convocation thanksgiving warned academics not to be barriers to the success of their students.
“Stop telling students that ‘don’t think you can come here and graduate with a first class.’ Please, stop telling those who have come here for Postgraduate that ‘don’t think you can come and get a degree and go away’, please, stop,” the Vice Chancellor cautioned.
Prof Iorapuu disclosed that he took over the leadership of the university with one “mind, heart and soul,” saying he hopes to run the race to finish with one heart, mind, and soul.
He, therefore, announced employment for two first-class graduates of the university in Economics and Accounting.
Meanwhile, BSU, according to its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Sir Paul Chukwuma has continued to maintain its reputation as a centre of academic excellence, evidenced in the accreditation of all courses by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and all relevant professional bodies, and strengthening the postgraduate school whose research and contributions are addressing pressing societal issues.
According to the Pro-Chancellor, the university’s key partnerships with international institutions, have facilitated academic exchange of projects and access to cutting-edge knowledge for staff and students in Theatre Arts, Economics, Biology, Chemistry and History.
Sir Chukwuma called on BSU Alumni to endow scholarships, support infrastructural growth and share their expertise and experiences for the growth of the university. He added that the Governing Council was working towards improving welfare of staff as well as making environment conducive for teaching and research.
